Chag Pesach Sameach! (Happy Passover Holiday!)

Passover 2024 begins at sundown on Monday, April 22, and ends the evening of Tuesday, April 30, for most Jews in the diaspora. Jews in the land of Israel and some Reform Jews in diaspora will end Passover on the evening of Monday, April 29. Pesach is the Hebrew word for Passover.

An eight-day festival, Passover commemorates the biblical story of the Exodus and liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. It celebrates freedom, the power of faith and hope, and the strength and perseverance of the Jewish people.

Families and loved ones will gather around the Passover Seder table to celebrate freedom as they share symbolic foods, like Matzah, Marror, Haroset, and other traditional foods and wine, read from the Haggadah, and recite the Four Questions with the younger generations.

Passover is also an opportunity to celebrate Canada's Jewish community and the many contributions that Jewish Canadians have made – and continue to make – to our country.

Let us all reaffirm our commitment to stand against antisemitism, oppression, and hatred in all its forms and to work to build a better world for all.

As we think of our Jewish friends and community celebrating Pesach, let us be mindful of the ongoing conflict and hardship that many are facing here in Canada and abroad.
